GM P01 / P59 PCM Hardware Reference

▶ Abbreviations / Glossary
PCM
Powertrain Control Module - the computer that controls engine and transmission.
OS
Operating System - the base firmware programmed into the PCM (GM calibration number).
HW
Hardware - revision number of the PCM's physical circuit board.
IAC
Idle Air Control - circuit to control idle speed via a stepper motor. Requires specific hardware on the board.
DBC
Drive By Cable - traditional mechanical throttle with a physical cable between pedal and throttle body.
DBW
Drive By Wire - electronic throttle with no cable; the PCM controls the throttle body directly.
BDM
Background Debug Mode - low-level debug port on the Motorola 68k; allows flashing the PCM directly on the board (bench flash).
VPW
Variable Pulse Width - J1850 VPW protocol used by P01/P59 on the OBD-II connector. Speeds: 10.4 Kbps (1X) or 41.6 Kbps (4X).
4X
VPW 4X Mode - doubles the bus speed to ~41.6 Kbps; reduces PCM read/write time.
XDF
eXternal Data File - map definition file for TunerPro; describes where tables and scalars are located in PCM memory.
Flex Fuel
Native compatibility with gasoline/ethanol blends (E10-E85); requires an alcohol content sensor and OS with support.
AMD / Intel
Flash chip manufacturer soldered on the board. Determines which OS is compatible: some OS only work with Intel chips.

Intel vs AMD flash: P59 units with Intel chips (hw 12570558, 12575502, 12580786) only work correctly with Intel-only OS. Flashing an AMD OS onto an Intel chip won't save parameters (no brick, but won't work either). From 2004 onward GM switched to AMD chips.

P01 1997-2000 are fragile when flashing. An error during writing can permanently damage them. If you're going to tune a 97-00, have spare units on hand. The 0411 (2001-2004) is the only version recommended for tuning work.

Intel-only OS (12579405, 12593058): Only work correctly on P59 with Intel chip (hw 12570558, 12575502, 12580786). On an AMD chip the OS loads but cannot save parameters. It won't brick, but the PCM becomes unusable for tuning until reflashed with the correct OS.
